CIBIO has 3 main thematic lines, which are (i) Evolution, Genetics & Genomics; (ii) Biodiversity, Ecology & Conservation; and (iii) Sustainability, Ecosystems & the Environment.
The main activity areas are:
- Advancing scientific knowledge in the fields of biodiversity and evolutionary biology - special emphasis on the understanding of processes that lead to present-day patterns of biological diversity and on the principles governing the spatial partitioning of genotypic and phenotypic variation.
- Integrating and deepening ecological, taxonomical and biogeographical knowledge at different scales worldwide - with a particular focus on the Iberian and Mediterranean biological heritage.
- Using scientific knowledge to set and suggest appropriate conservation priorities and management tools - in collaboration with local and national agricultural, forestry and hunting authorities.
- Providing top-level advanced training - MSc and PhD levels and short-term training courses.
- Disseminating scientific knowledge and promoting public awareness and appreciation of biodiversity.

CIBIO-InBIO was the first Portuguese Research Centre, considering all scientific fields, to win a 3.5M€ EU CAPACITIES Program, used to install a Next-Generation DNA Sequencing Platform, specifically through the acquisition of the equipment Illumina HiSeq 1500, Illumina MiSeq and IlluminaCompute system (Dell/Isilon). Later, the capacity of CIBIO-InBIO to develop research and innovation was also boosted by an ERA Chair EnvMetaGen funded by H2020.
The molecular genetics and ecology laboratories form a very strong experimental and analytical component and possess a dedicated Centre for Molecular Analyses.
CIBIO also has an electronics laboratory equipped with PCB prototyping, 3D scanning and printing, thermoforming and potting capabilities, and a high-performing multicore server.
